ORDINANCE OR LAW COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS

This optional endorsement is a valuable enhancement to consider adding to your business property insurance coverage. Without it, if you experience a covered property damage claim, you may have to pay out of pocket for the additional cost to repair, reconstruct, or remodel your property so that it is in compliance with current building, zoning, or land use codes or laws.

With The Andover Companies Ordinance or Law Coverage endorsement, you will typically get financial assistance with the increased cost of construction, if related to the enforcement of ordinance or law, for:

  • Repairing or Reconstructing Damaged Portions of the Building*
  • Reconstructing or Remodeling Undamaged Portions of the Building*
  • Demolition and Removal of Debris in Undamaged Parts of the Property

* This coverage applies only if the restored or remodeled property is intended for similar occupancy as the current property, unless such occupancy is no longer permitted by ordinance or law.

DO YOU NEED ORDINANCE OR LAW COVERAGE?

For most commercial property owners, it makes financial sense to at least explore getting this endorsement. Local building, zoning, and land use ordinances and laws are continuously updated. So, even if the commercial property you own or rent was constructed as recently as 10 years ago, it may not meet current code requirements for electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sprinkler systems; accessibility; and more. In addition, enforcement of these upgrades generally applies to both the damaged and undamaged portions of your building, which can increase the cost of construction considerably—added expenses that your business property insurance policy typically excludes.

“You can truly understand the value of your home insurance when you have a claim. My husband and I experienced firsthand how easy it was to work with The Andover Companies. A tree fell on our property, blocking the driveway. We submitted a claim with Andover and within days had a check in hand to reimburse us for the tree removal. The process was seamless.”
